A few of my hiking buddies hiked up a peak just above the Mauna Kea Observatory visitors center, at about 9,300 feet. This was just before sunset.

This panorama was taken near Mauna Kea, on a lower peak. The lava flow shown is very old, and is intact because of lack of erosion in the high desert.
