"A" Mountain, officially known as Tempe Butte, overlooks the campus of Arizona State University and provides a perfect view of the entire Phoenix area. Opposite from the campus is Tempe Town Lake, formed by an inflatable dam across the Salt River. It provides boating and fishing for the entire area and even hosts an Iron Man Triathalon. The butte gets it's nickname from the large concrete capital "A" that faces the campus and is usually painted yellow-gold unless pranksters from the cross-state rival, U of A have turned it blue. The tall buildings of downtown Phoenix lie to the west, as well as the runways of Sky Harbor Airport. Super Bowl XXX was held in Sun Devil stadium whose seats can be seen close-by to the east. Many of the parking structures and buildings on campus are covered with solar panels that take advantage of over 300 sunny days per year.
