- Description
-
Elephant seals haul out to molt, breed, give birth, and rest at a few specific rookeries along the California coast. Piedras Blancas, at the southern end of the Big Sur coast, is one of the most accessible for people. It may be attractive to the elephant seals because it has wide sandy beaches and protected shallow areas just off shore for the pups to learn to swim. This view looks towards the south over the herd. The image was captured in January, when the females have come ashore to give birth. Good information about elephant seals and this rookery in particular is available at www.elephantseal.org/index.htm
the image was taken in the later afternoon when lighting was not ideal for photography with the sun low in the sky to the west. As a result, the image has more contrast than I would like.
