Description

A view upstream of Whitney Creek where it crosses Highway 97 north of Mt Shasta. Debris flows occasionallly flow down these drainages, usually in the warm summer months following intense rainfall. One such event occured in 1997 and was video recorded at this location by US Forest Service personnel. The debris flow flowed over the highway and caused extensive damage. Note the large boulders in the debris flow deposits visible in the channel banks. The video shows huge boulders moving down the channel during the debris flow event. youtu.be/z0N5zrxsN98 Will open in a new tab or windowWhitney Creek is fed by the Whitney Glacier on the north side of Mt Shasta. It then flows over Whitney Falls and flows through a deep canyon, as shown on this gigapan: www.gigapan.org/gigapans/83456Images of debris flow deposits farther up the mountain on the adjacent Bolam Creek drainage, also highly impacted by the 1997 event, are visible in this gigapan: www.gigapan.org/gigapans/83472 Information contained here is derived mainly from:
