- Description

Taken along the Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park. The trail is a boardwalk over a sawgrass marsh (Taylor Slough), beginning at the Royal Palm Visitor Center in the Park.
The center of the image is a sawgrass prairie, a willow thicket off to the right, and a hardwood forest behind the visitor center (to the left). Willows prefer deeper, submerged areas like sloughs. Sawgrass prefers slightly higher, seasonally wet-and-dry places. Hardwoods can only survive in high and dry locations. Only a few inches of elevation can cause the dramatic change you see in vegetation.
