The Owens Valley forms the westernmost basin of the Basin and Range province and lies immediately east of the Sierra Nevada. Throughout the Quaternary it has been a center of volcanism and seismicity.
This view of Owens Valley, from a point east of Big Pine late on an August afternoon, shows the Sierra Nevada stretching down the western side of the valley. South is towards the left and north is towards the right. Crater Mountain, a Quaternary basaltic cinder cone and lava flow vent, is the dominant feature in the central middle ground. It is the northernmost eruptive center in the Big Pine Volcanic Field, additional edifices and features of which are visible towards the left.
Running right up the center of the valley is the Owens Valley Fault Zone, on which the 7.4 magnitude Lone Pine earthquake occurred in 1872. Although the low sun angle obscures much of the detail in this image, fault scarps of the Owens Valley Fault Zone, locally called the Fish Springs Fault, show up nicely across the valley on the near side of Crater Mountain.
