The gardens at Stourhead from just outside the Pantheon (a small building containing www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=9446).
The composition is fine and I quite like the colours but the detail is very poor. Not sure what happened here. Inattention I expect - it was the end of a long day.

Alfred's Tower was damaged during WWII by a returning B-25 (I believe) that could not make it back to its home base and hit Alfred's Tower when it descended. I am not sure that the Tower has been completely repaired... lack of funds. Sadly, there were some deaths on the plane when this occurred.

It's two and a half miles to the tower from Stourhead. Quite a trip on foot if you are lugging loads of pano gear. Actually, you are supposed to be able to see Alfred's Tower from Bath: see www.gigapan.org/viewConversation.ph p?id=26434.

Alfred's Tower may be more exciting, but you have a good walk to get there and it may be free for a night's stay :)

In fact the Spread Eagle Inn offers B&B accommodation. This pub is right in the middle of the site. There is also a bus to Stourton. Not 100% convenient because that leaves you with a 1km walk, but somewhat cheaper than a taxi. www.traveline.org.uk Will open in
a new tab or window is quite good for local transport.

I have been to England a number of times and try to always stay in Bath. Some of the most memorable times I have enjoyed during my stays are trips to Stourhead: Catch the train from Bath to Frome and then from Frome to Stourhead by taxi. A nice tip assures that the taxi guy will be back at an appointed time to take you back to Frome... because there is no place to stay overnight except for maybe Alfred's Tower, but some suggest that it is haunted.
