Opened in 2003, Illinois Institute of Technology’s McCormick Tribune Campus Center was designed by Rem Koolhaas. An integral component of Koolhaas’ design is the stainless steel clad tube seen here. The tube surrounds 530 feet of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Green Line and was designed to lessen the noise generated by passing trains. Described as “an amazing engineering feat” by IIT President, Lew Collens, the tube softens the sounds and vibrations of the trains which pass through it.
