111201 - Costa Rica, Area de Conservacion de Guanacaste (ACG), Volcan Cacao, 600m

Cacao 600

Caps of clouds over the volcanoes at the start of the day. Drove up to Quebrada Grande and picked up Manuel and then continued in the Jimmy to Gongorra. Hiked over the river to the Malaise site. Traps were in the ground by 8:30. The dominant ant here is CERTAINLY a small, stout Pachycondyla. I have never seen pitfall traps so full. Also some cool stem-living Dolichoderinae and Azteca. The stem living ants (Myrmelachista?) had queens flying too. The weather was reezy, clear and warm. After pulling traps here, did some RNAlater sampling for acacia ants on the way down the mountain.
