Lee Lawrie's Phosphor and Hesper, plus The Torch Race, Los Angeles Public Library. These images are part of the exterior of the Los Angeles Public Library, designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, featuring architectural sculpture by Lee Oskar Lawrie, (1877-1963). Based in New York, Lawrie created the models or maquettes and shipped them to Los Angeles, where they were carved in situ.
They represent another example of Lawrie's finesse with the medium of stone using Art Deco in his own, distinctive style.
See www.leelawrie.com
for more examples of his art.
