The second gate of the Vauban fortress of Alba Iulia, Transylvania, Romania (November 15th, 2011, at sunset) by Calin Suteu

(RO) Construită la scară redusă, poarta a II-a reproduce aspectele formale ale primei porţi, având aceleaşi elemente structurale: pilaştrii laterali şi stâlpi centrali care delimitează cele trei intrări, cu deschiderile libere în partea superioară (fără arcade de legătură). Pe fiecare din laturile de est a celor doi stâlpi centrali este adosată statuia unui Atlant (unul reprezentând un tânăr fără barbă şi altul un bătrân cu barbă ), iar deasupra un leu rampant, prezentând monograma împăratului Carol al VI-lea. Poarta a II-a a cetăţii bastionare Alba Carolina este amplasată pe cea de-a doua linie de apărare, în capătul de sus al unui culoar construit în rampă (130 m lungine, 12 m lăţime), prevăzut pe partea stângă la urcare, cu un zid de cărămidă şi cu un sistem de creneluri pentru flancarea şanţului.

(EN) Built on a different scale compared to the others, the second gate reproduces the same constructive elements used for the first gate, namely the side pilasters and inner pilons that delimitate three open passage ways. On each of the eastern side's of the inner pilons are the statues of two Atlants (a young one and an bearded elder), each with its own rampant lion sitting on top, the monogram of emperor Carol VI. The gate is situated on the second line of defense, at the upper end of a sloped walk way (130 meters long, 12 meters wide) flanked by brick walls with shooting holes on the eastern side.
