vol 3 issue 3The Musée du Louvre (Louvre Museum) is one of the largest, most famous and most visited museums in the world.
The museum is both a historic monument and a landmark of Paris. It is located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris on the Right Bank of the Seine River.
The museum has 60,600 square metres (652,300 square feet) of exhibit space displaying almost 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 19th century.
The building the Louvre is in is the Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre) was first a fortress built in the late 12th century by King Philip II. Over the years various kings of France added numerous extensions to the building until it reached its present size. In 1682, King Louis XIV of France chose leave the Louvre Palace for the Palace of Versailles. He left the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection.
