- Description
-
The Sir James Pit was operated for the mining of siderite, an iron carbonate ore. The siderite ore was originally deposited on the seafloor ~2.75 Ga as the result of seafloor hydrothermal venting in the Archean oceans. The dark outcrop seen here at the lip of the pit is thought to represent the primary vent from which this deposit would have been exhaled.
