Whitney Falls occurs where Whitney Creek flows over a resistant 9,300 year old basaltic andesite lava flow. Melt water from the Whitney Glacier feeds Whitney Creek. The water in Whitney Creek is usually chocolate brown from the sediment eroded by the glacier and the creek as it flows down the northern flank of Mt Shasta.

The north side of Mt Shasta consists of basaltic andesite lava flows and unconsolidated pyroclastic, debris flow, and river (fluvial) deposits. Pyroclasitic material was deposited about 1800 hyears ago. Since this time, Whitney Creek has eroded this material, indicating that the Whitney gorge visible in this image was formed during the last 1800 years.

Across the gorge, the 9300 year-old basaltic andesite flow forms the stout western wall of the gorge.

The information here was extracted from Fuente and Bachmann (1999) and Hirt (1999), both in "Across the Klamath/Cascade Frontier", the NAGT Fall Field Conference guidebook.
