El Capitan. Need anyone say more? About 3300 feet high, it stikes awe in the heart of any who see it. It challanges the athletes who endeavor to climb it. No mountain is more iconic of Yosemite than El Capitan.
El Capitan is composed of, of course, El Capitan Granite. A few dikes of darker diorite cut across its face. One of these intrusions is well known because its outline resembles a map of North America.
Other features visible in the image include flakes (see the snapshot of Boot Flake), overhangs marking the top of the source areas of rock falls, and fractures where rock has broken off and fallen to the valley below.
The site where this image was taken is a popular spot to watch climbers on the big wall.
