His claim is good. The kings of Wessex gradually took over, becoming king of kings, and a few had temporary lordship over most of England for a while - Egbert for example - or merely claimed it. Athelstan united the thrones, it didn't last. It wasn't unitl Edgar that it was stopped falling apart and we had one solid king of kings. However it wasn't until William that we had one royal family. It's an interesting time in history with some great characters, who can resist Eric Bloodaxe the viking!

@Chris. You'be told me before that 'the first king of England' depends on what one means by 'king' and 'England'. Care to elaborate on Malmesbury's claim the Athelstan was the first king of England?

It's not that small, and is open all week as a church and major tourist attraction. When it was complete it was massive, especially for the 12th century!

Tiger attacks in the UK in the 1700s? No, surely not - but it seems to be true. Nice one David. And yes, there is no interior shot (until we go back, hint hint)

Cmlbath, as far as the fair maiden, Hannah Twynnoy, is concerned, she has her very own wikipedia web page for all to see: www.gigapan.org/gigapans/81372/snap shots/223982/

Not waiting for Kilgore's answer, let me add this tidbit: from my source, the church is being used; however, since it is so small, I am thinking that the interior has parts of it locked up except for the weekend.

Where is the gigapan of the lovely interior then Killgore? Don't tell me you went there and didn't go inside?
C Lloyd (July 07, 2011, 12:17PM )
Hannah Twynnoy I have never heard of. The first king of England is also buried there (okay his tomb is empty) The great Athelstan!

Of the four taken in Malmesbury, I like this one the best, but you know I am partial to churches, especially one that has some history, and this one really has some unique history because of Hannah Twynnoy, the first lady to have been killed in Britian in a tiger attack, and is burried in the churchyard www.gigapan.org/gigapans/81373/

Cheers Chris. It isn't as sharp as it could be everywhere. I was experimenting with a mixture of fixed focus and autofocus. This seems to me to be the hardest way of doing things :-)

Another nice one Kilgore, -fun to explore the details. -Chris
