On Ishigaki Island in Okinawa prefecture, I was introduced to the garden of Mr. and Mrs Toshiyuki Onaga.
After retiring from the city office Mr. Onaga works daily tending to his landscape garden that he began
10 years ago. After watering his plants he noticed that they become livelyand full of energy. He said that
this garden is his small way to green his town and contribute to the reduction of Global Warming. He takes
daily pleasure by tending to his plants from the morning and after the work is done, he enjoys a glass of beer
relaxing in the garden. This gigapan will be used in Botany and Ethnobotany classes. Kauai Community College students can study
the use of endemic and introduced plants in a landscape. Many of the plants in his garden have ethnobotanical
uses.

The Cycas revoluta is living fossil, coexisting in the Mesozoic Era with dinosaurs about 300 million years ago!. Commonly known as Sago Palm (although not in the palm family) it can be found growing world wide in a wide variation of climates. The male plant has a fuzzy cone and the female plant has an amazing ball-dome flower. The frawns are very tough to the touch.
