This nature loop trail is on the way to the Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. the gigapan was done by three students Amber Harder, Kanoe Sakihama (Both Kauai Community College) and Alison Yamamoto(Kapaa High School)
the subject of the gigapan is a stand of Iliau ( Wilksia gymoxiphium) a ancient sunflower that arrived in the Hawaiian islands some seven million years ago on probably a bird. The isolation of the islands and the environmental conditions through adaptive radiation created unique species. This genus and species only occurs on this island and is part of a greater group of plants that belong to the silversword alliance. The habitat is mesic dry forest and this area has the largest population of plants. The area is a mixture of diverse plants both native and introduced to the islands. The gigapan will be used to try to monitor the population changes over time.
WE ASK FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE> ,There are three snapshots with this gigapan labeled Iliau count. Please help us inventory these plants by counting the number of plants in each snapshot and reporting back to us in the comment section. Thank you ahead of time for your help. MAHALO

I counted at least 100 but without a better system to track the plants that I have previously counted I get lost. I have been to this location and there are certainly over 100 plants in the area...-Leigh Hicks

I tried counting the overall iliaus in the entire panorama! lots of counting, I came up with 443 iliau and 94 flowering total in the entire pic! Fun to search, Im gonna keep trying to search for other things....
