On May 2, 2011 the Army Corps of Engineers used explosives to purposfuly breach the Birds Point Levee and flood the Birds Point -- New Madrid Floodway to relieve flooding pressure on Cairo, IL. This image shows the breached levee, erosion, and deposition of sediments. Photographed June 17, 2011. More info from the USGS:
