The Black Ven landslide is one of the largest coastal landslides in Europe. The slip from 1958/9 pushed mud approximately 200m into the sea and the remnants of one slip can still be seen as an arc of boulders in the lower left of the image. As a result these beaches are famous for fossils as are the ledges at low tide BUT stay away from the cliffs as they contain mud and quicksand and it is all too easy to get stuck! The whole area is subject to slips every year and the aim of this gigapan is to return to capture change. The sea wall at East Cliff, on the eastern side of Lyme, and the cliffs above are subject to planning permission for a new coast defence scheme so again, this image is to record that change.
