This is one of the most photographed spots in all of Canada. The octagonal lighthouse on the bare, jumbled granite rocks is a lighthouse icon, too, and regularly appears on compilation calendars, photo sets, etc. of these seafarer's warning lights. This one was established in 1868, but the present concrete structure was constructed in 1914. The adjacent Peggy's Cove is a lobster-fishing port, but the population is only around 50 for the entire village. It is a heritage preservation area and there are strict guidelines and procedures for any changes to the picturesque area. However, we did see a few satellite dishes which seem to have escaped "heritage" scrutiny! Peggy's Cove was in the news in September 1998 as the Swissair Flight 111 crash site is 12 kilometers (about 8 miles) off the coast here and some of the rescue boats arriving at the scene first were from the Cove's lobster fleet.
