Walcott was the discoverer of the Burgess Shale, an extraordinary fossil deposit in Yoho National Park, outside of Field, British Columbia, Canada. He served as the third director of the U.S. Geological Survey and was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in northwest Washington, D.C.
