Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU), founded in 1884, was originally U.S. Indian Industrial Training School, part of a government program to remove young Native Americans from reservations (as well as their indiginous languages and customs) and train them for trades. The boys were trained for agricultural work by operating the campus as a farm to raise it's foods. The girls were trained to be seamstresses and housemaids. The curriculum was to prepare them for employment as workers and servants in the white culture. Over the years a sports program developed with the addition of Haskell Stadium. Today the institution offers programs in Indian culture, environmental studies, business administration and teacher education for transfer into baccalaureate degree-granting institutions and direct employment. The students represent tribes across the United States as a unique program for intertribal studies.
