Description

It's never a good sign when you see stacks of equipment and dirt clumps on top of bee hives in a holding yard. It usually means the bees have taken a turn for the worst.

If you search the image you can see the stacks of dead colonies ready to be hauled out of the yard. I have snapshotted as many dead hives on the ground as I could find (look for dirt clumps on top of the hives).

The beekeeper told us that he lost more than 60% of his colonies in this yard. We sampled eight hives out of the hand full that were still alive and found little to no nosema or varroa in the sample. He will get his virus analysis from the Bee Research Lab in Beltsville, MD in the coming months…maybe the report on the viruses will shed some light on why he may have lost so many colonies.

The beekeeper also told us that he had a truckload of bees less than 2 miles from this apiary and that the bees there were doing fine. It is hard to say what could have caused the colonies to collapse in this yard. Part of the problem is that there are not enough people out there to lend a hand when beekeepers are having problems. Hopefully the work we will be doing as part of the Bee Informed Partnership will help to identify some of the causes and offer practical solutions for beekeeping related problems.
