Gunflint Lake forms part of the old fur-trading route extending westward from Lake Superior to Rainy Lake. The route was originally selected to give the minimum number of canoe portages. Its use by the inhabitants of both countries is protected by the Webster–Ashburton Treaty, signed August 9, 1842.
