Description

Cape Evans, Ross Island, Antarctica.

The cape was discovered by the Discovery expedition (1901-04) under Robert Falcon Scott, who named it the Skuary. Scott's second expedition, the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-13), built its headquarters here, renaming the cape for Lieutenant Edward R.G.R. Evans, Royal Navy, second in command of the expedition. Scott's headquarters building still exists and is known as Scott's Hut. For over a century the site has withstood some of the most extreme environmental conditions in the world. In 2008 the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust launched a major conservation project to save the site. Read more: www.nzaht.org/AHT/CapeEvans Will open in a new tab or window/
