A nice shady spot for an afternoon relaxation in the park. This is a special tree, the "Hitachi Tree," in Moanalua Gardens.

The Hitachi tree, known botanically as Samanea saman, has a common names of Monkey Pod or Rain Tree. This particular specimen is found in Moanalua Gardens, once the summer home of King Kamehameha V. The gardens were established in the 1850s and this tree occupies a prominent location in a large open area. This is known as the 'Hitachi Tree' because it is a corporate symbol of the Japan-based Hitachi Group. This tree is well-known to most Japanese. Visitors from Japan often stop by Moanalua Gardens to get their photograph with this famous tree.
