    Thanks for the suggestion. I knew it was overexposed, but am struggling with my camera to lock the exposure and the autofocus. It's a Nikon Coolpix P60 and thus far I've been unable to lock those things, but I've also not tried as much as I intend to. I know it's not obviously described in the manual though.

    You need to use manual exposure. Switch the dial to M. Press the shutter button half way and look through the view finder at the exposure scale. Adjust the shutter speed until the marker is at zero. Otherwise you will capture a patch work like this.
