Description

a rare shot of Nathan Rice of the USDA Beltsville, MD Bee Research Lab recording notes rather then working the hives. Congratulations Nathan, it feels good to sit on that cooler doesn't it?

Since we started working in the upper left hand corner of the panorama, the camera caught us just as we were going into our first hives of the yard. If you look at the hives to the northeast of us you can spot the sample kits we use to collect honey bee samples.

Typically we get out of the car and unload everything we need to work. Two people grab sample kit bags (Which consist of: two bags per apiary 10 sample kits per bag=20 samples per apiary) they place the sample kit on top of the corresponding hive and move on to the next one until all 20 sampling kits are on top of the hives. While all this is going on the third person does whatever else is needed to complete the job (light the smoker, fill the staple gun, grab clipboard and cooler, set up GigaPan). Two People sample and read frames of bees while the third person records and does damage control. After the yards been assessed and sampled we pack up the car and drive to the next apiary, get out and do it all over again. We sampled a 100 colonies this day, not bad for all the driving we had to do.
