CASTIGLIONE OLONA - LA COLLEGIATA by Vittorio Ghelfi

Chiesa “madre” di Castiglione Olona, fatta erigere dal Cardinale Branda Castiglioni e consacrata il 25 marzo 1425, sovrasta imponente il Borgo in cima al colle un tempo dominato dall’inespugnabile “castrum” dell’antica e nobilissima casata dei Castiglioni.

E’ una basilica lombardo/gotica, a croce latina a tre navate senza transetto, con la facciata cuspidale tutta a mattoni a vista, come l’intero edificio, decorata al centro da un artistico rosone.

Di singolare importanza e bellezza è la lunetta che impreziosisce il portale d’ingresso col Cardinale fondatore inginocchiato davanti alla Vergine in trono col Bambino, tra i Santi Patroni Stefano e Lorenzo martiri, Sant’Ambrogio e San Clemente.

Il tesoro più grande della Chiesa è costituito dal ciclo d’affreschi di Masolino da Panicale che, probabilmente dal 1434, affresca con mirabile arte i cinque spicchi della volta sopra l’altare esaltando la vita della Vergine Maria. Da sinistra a destra: la Natività, l’Annunciazione, l’Incoronazione, lo Sposalizio e l’Adorazione dei Magi. Sopra l’altare l’Assunzione di Maria. Conclude il ciclo la Dormitio Virginiis recentemente scoperta ed attribuita a Paolo Schiavo.

Nelle pareti sottostanti le storie dei Santi Patroni Lorenzo e Stefano attribuite a Paolo Schiavo e al Vecchietta. La Crocifissione è di Neri di Bicci, tutti artisti toscani del XV secolo.

Particolarmente interessante il sarcofago che contiene i resti del Cardinal Branda, il lampadario fiammingo e la semplice mensa d’altare col celebrante rivolto verso il popolo.

Church "mother" of Castiglione Olona, built and consecrated by Cardinal Branda Castiglioni March 25, 1425, overlooks the majestic village on the hill once dominated dall'inespugnabile "castrum" of the ancient and noble lineage of Castiglioni.

It 's a basilica Lombard / Gothic, a Latin cross with three naves without a transept, with the front cusp in all brick, like the entire building, decorated in the center of an artistic rose.

Of singular importance and beauty is the bezel that enhances the main entrance with Cardinal founder kneeling before the Virgin and Child Enthroned, with Saints Patrons Stephen and Lawrence martyrs, St. Ambrose and St. Clement.

The greatest treasure of the Church is the cycle of frescoes by Masolino Panicale that probably from 1434, with admirable art the five frescoed the vault over the altar enhancing the life of the Virgin Mary. From left to right: the Nativity, the Annunciation, the Coronation, Marriage and the Adoration of the Magi. Above the altar of the Assumption of Mary. Completes the cycle and the recently discovered Dormition Virginiis attributed to Paolo Schiavo.

The walls below the stories of the Patron Saints Lawrence and Stephen attributed to Paolo Schiavo and the Oldie. The Crucifixion is Bicci Blacks of all Tuscan artists of the fifteenth century.

Particularly interesting is the sarcophagus containing the remains of Cardinal Branda, the chandelier Flemish and the simple altar table with the celebrant facing the people.
