Slash pine (Pinus elliottii) is a common native tree in southern Florida. Historically, slash pines were a source for terpentine. Gum trappers made a triangular cut (slash) in the bark in order to extract the sap the same way that sugar maples are tapped for sap to produce maple syrup.
