Frankfurt's skyline is fairly unique in Germany and as a result Frankfurt is often called "Mainhatten", a play on the name of the river that flows through Frankfurt, the Main river. Frankfurt itself is named after a ford in the river used by the Franks in ancient times: Frankfurt is "Ford of the Franks", as it were.
