Bodrum, one of the most popular Turkish holiday resorts, was an ancient Greek city on the southwest coast of Anatolia (Asia Minor), on a picturesque, advantageous site on the Gulf of Gökova. The city was famed for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (built between 353 and 350 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was the site of the Siege of Halicarnassus, between Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. Today the great Bodrum Castle of St. Peter, built by the Knights of Rhodes in 1404, is the attractive center of the town. The panorama shows the south bay behind the castle.
