Nikkor P C 105mm f/2.5, Nikon...
There are several dozen examples of this forest community in Vermont, most of them less than a few hectares in size. This is the most recently discovered example. The community is distinguished by the presence of pitch pine, which reaches its northern range limit in Vermont, and occurs in only three community types in the state, all of them rare. There are about 30 pitch pines, 30 red pines, and 100-200 white pines on this 1 ha outcrop of Cheshire quartzite. Chestnut oak, red oak, white oak, red maple, and shadbush are also common. The shrub layer is dominated by huckleberry, but a few open areas have only lichen and moss covering portions of the smooth bedrock. Surprisingly for such a drought prone situation, sphagnum moss is common in a few areas. Unlike most examples of this community nearby, this one is on a low slab of quartzite only 5-6 m higher than the surrounding land; it is hardly a "summit."
Some botanical and technical notes are in a comment.
