Description

Utah's first pioneer burial site was in downtown Salt Lake City. Beginning in 1847, at least 32 pioneers were buried in that location. Lost to memory for decades, the cemetery was rediscovered during construction work in 1986. Not all of the remains, which included a number of children, could be identified on the basis of existing records. The pioneers were reburied here overlooking the valley they came to settle. The large grave markers represent the adults; the smaller markers represent the children and infants.
