The coastal defenses around the Golden Gate are inspirational at multiple levels. At one level many brave men and women worked hard in order to protect us from foreign enemies.
And they are cool ruins to explore. But the other lesson is that the darned things were never (I think literally _never_) actually used for our defense.
Either they were a very very good defense against tigers - after all, you don't see any tigert - or they just represent a horrible waste of human effort, ingenuity, and money which could have gone towards better causes!
