This is Crystal Springs Reservoir, the water source for San Francisco and northern San Mateo county. Most of this water comes from Hetch Hetchy near Yosemite in the Sierras. The beautiful valley chosen for this reservoir was formed by the San Andreas fault. As a matter of fact, the fault takes its name from a similar lake a couple miles to the north of Crystal Springs that is also part of the watershed. This photo was taken from the dam that holds all this water from flooding San Mateo. The dam was built in 1890 and had weathered many earthquakes in its history.
