DSLR 600mm lens = 306 images. Regarding the stitching, I recently had a similar problem with a distant horizon.

Nice shot John. I notice this is 0.3Gpix but the field of view is only 55ยบ. What kit did you use/how many pictures? Re the masts, stitchers are known to have problems with lines running across an empty background. You will find many gigapans badly-stitched flagpoles and telephone cables for example.
