The first full-res stitch of our panorama taken at the top of the Corcovado mountain near the base of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This digital photograph consists of a total of 6223 pictures taken at with a Canon t2i, a 400mm lens, a 2x extender, and the new GigaPan Epic Pro. It has around 67 gigapixels, which we believe is the world record in terms of resolution. There are some artifacts due to exposure inconsistency and vignetting that we hope to address in a later update.

RioHK is a collaborative gigapixel panorama project between IMPA (Rio de Janeiro) and HKUST (Hong Kong) led by Professors Luiz Velho (IMPA), Diego Nehab (IMPA) and Pedro Sander (HKUST).

@bohonus: as I said earlier, gigapan's viewer stretches the most detailed image 3x (or so), so no matter what panorama you view with it, the higher resolution level will appear blurred. But he has a point, it's somewhat easy to come up with a gigapixel panorama nowadays, it's a matter of having a good equipment (mostly). The bottleneck is during post-processing. Autopano *crawls* with 60GP, let alone higher resolutions, and this is using linear blending. It's almost impossible with multiband blending or smartblend. But we're working on software solutions to overcome these issues, just wait and see :)

@zmalol: the focus was fixed, that was a constraint of the 2x multiplier used. But yes, focus could (and will) be improved next time. But other factors are involved too: atmospheric condition (hot air causing distortions, etc), thermal noise on CCD and most importantly: gigapan most detailed view is stretching the original image 3 times (or so), so there's upsampling artifacts (blurring).

How about lens focus? Was it locked during shooting? Reason for this question is that some parts of the panorama seems to be out of the focus in the nearest and farthest range (see two snapshots at the max zoom gigapan.org/gigapans/54825/snapshot s/154327/ and gigapan.org/gigapans/54825/snapshot s/154328/). In most gigapans at max zoom there is more details available. For me this brings the issue (perhaps discussed already) of lens performance for large multithousandshot gigapans.

@AutoMateUser: Thanks! Yes, we plan to put together a more detailed description of the picture capture and stitching process once we address the remaining exposure issues. It took a few hours to take the photos (about 45 images per minute in GigaPan's fastest mode) and we used autopano giga for this first stitching attempt. It took multiple days to complete. :) Cheers.

Congratulations on the Rio GigaPan :) When will we see panoramas this size taken of Hong Kong? GigaPans of HK taken from the Peak and taken from Kowloon would quickly end up on the first page of most popular GigaPans.

Congratulations on this achievement! The biggest challenge for these very large panoramas is the stitching. Can you tell us about how you did it, what software you used, and how long it took, etc.
