- Description
-
The Kennecott Smelter is located at the north end of the Oquirrh Mountains and exists primarily to refine and smelt copper from the Bingham Canyon open pit porphyry copper mine. Completed in 1974, the Kennecott Smokestack is, according to Wikipedia, the tallest free-standing structure west of the Mississippi River and the fourth tallest smokestack in the world.
Along the lower slopes of the Oquirrh Mountains one can identify the paleoshoreline terraces of glacial Lake Bonneville.
