We left Ushuaia 3 days ago and have successfully crossed the Drake Passage. Before us we see Bellingshausen Research Station on King Edward Island, which is just west of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The multicolored buildings of the base are softened by the morning fog. Closer, and much clearer, a cluster of rusting storage tanks await their removal from the island.

Over towards the bow, a sailor prepares the zodiacs for our first excursion. We will soon walk down the gang plank to the zodiacs that will take us ashore.

The Professor Multanovskiy is a small ship, with only 47 passengers on this cruise. The advantages of such a vessel become obvious when everyone is transferred quickly ashore, and we all have time to enjoy a walk on terra firma Antarctica.
