GigapanMagazine.org vol 2 issue 3
The third in a series of three Makapuu panos. The first two production were compromised by technical issues. The third had three automated pauses, in which three frames were lost and replaced. Thus the one black hole in the lava. But the action was really intense, in a good way this afternoon. A class from King Intermediate came out, visited the heiau, cleaned up some of the coastline. Then they had a pule blessing. Their bus is up in the parkinglot. The surf was excellent. Every part of the surfable coastline was being used. Even the tide pools were occupied.
Makapu'u is famous for its fishing and powerful surf. In Hawaiian Makapu'u means "bulging eyes." Just off-shore, Manana Island, also known as "Rabbit Island", because it was once inhabited by shipped-in rabbits, and Kaohikaipu, a volcanic islet are today both bird sanctuaries and thus off-limits for landing boats.
HPN Crew: Annabelle Beale, Susanne Haala, Andrea Vold, Phil Atoigue, Pete Britos.
