Kilauea Iki, Hawaii by Fred Espenak

Kilauea Iki is a collapsed crater along the eastern rim of Kilauea caldera (see www.gigapan.org/gigapans/48522/). It is approximately 1/2 by 3/4 miles in size. Kilauea Iki is best known for the 1959 eruption of a spectacular lava fountain. The prevailing trade wind blew the molten rock and pumice in the fountain southwestward where it built up the spatter cone called Pu'u Pua'i. The cone is visible on the far side of the crater as seen in this panorama. Beyond Pu'u Pua'i is the sulfur dioxide smoke plume from Halemaumau crater (gigapan.org/gigapans/48670/). Along the horizon to the right is the gently sloping cone of volcano Mauna Loa.
