Description

http://GigapanMagazine.org vol 2 issue 3

Back in the day Hotel Street was known as a notorious red-light district. Institutions like Iolani Palace, the Armed Forces YMCA and the Black Cat Tavern existed side by side with dance halls, bars and pubs of all sizes and shapes, generating a combustive culture of alcohol, pot, opium, free time, money in the pocket, tropical sun, peddlers, entrepreneurs, opportunists of all types, Hawaiians from Kalihi and Palama, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos and Caucasians from the four corners of earth.

Today, Bishop Square, a stone's throw from Chinatown, is populated by boutique restaurants like the Mediterranean restaurant Cafe Che Pasta, New Age buffet Umeke's and two large towers housing high-powered law firms, financial institutions, architects, boutique AD/PR agencies and other professionals.

The HPN Spring 2010 Team took this pano in their HPU back yard. It's one street over from Fort Street Mall, where the downtown campus is located. Hawaii Pacific News (HPN) is a student-run news and information network. We report on news, arts, entertainment, sports, university happenings and other stuff. We are located at Hawaii Pacific University in the heart of Downtown Honolulu. HPN Crew: Ryan Lam (pano), Mike Ang (still photos), Matt Boo (video), Pete Britos.
