This gigapan is of Burg Sooneck, on the left side of the Rhine river in Germany, not far from the Loreley. Built originally in 1261, it was destroyed in 1281 and, given its location on a sheer hill side and the difficulty in taking the castle, it was not rebuilt for several centuries. The current castle was rebuilt by a German crown prince to act as a hunting lodge, but was never used as such, and became property of the German state in 1918 after German royalty lost their ownership rights.
