My brother, EagleScout10 (who took this panorama), and I hiked to the top of Mount Chocorua September 2004. The mountain's bare summit is the result of a long-ago forest fire which destroyed all vegetation --- which has never reestablished itself, given the exposed location. The mountain is named for Chief Chocorua, head of the local Sokosis tribe, who died falling off the mountain under mysterious circumstances. It is a favourite hike in New England because of the terrific views of the surrounding White Mountains and valley lakes. There are many trails to the top --- we took the "Beeline" up (quick, but steep) and, on the way back, took a gentler descending trail which had been developed long ago for horseback adventurers. To learn more about the Chocorua trails, a good site to start is at: hikethewhites.com/chocorua.html
