The Common was ceded to the City of Cape Town in 1923 by King George V as a 'public open space for recreation and sport'. It is an all-weather, multipurpose and technologically advanced stadium. Built at a cost of R4,5 billion. Construction started in April 2007. After the World Cup 13000 seats on the top tier will be removed. Somerset Road is the main thoroughfare from Adderley Street to the stadium in Green Point. The road is lined with restaurants,nightclubs, boutiques, hotels etc. The soccer Fan Walk winds past Preswich place and along Somerset rd, past some of Cape Town's best entertainment spots.
