This street-level cliff-top view of La Jolla's Casa Beach faces west. It was taken in mid-January just prior to the spring Harbor Seal pupping season. Typically, photos of the San Diego/La Jolla seals show them lazing on the beach but a minimal amount of time spent at the railing at the end of the sea wall can provide a good chance to see a great deal of activity in the water as the seals swim out to the nearby kelp beds or return to the beach to recover from deep dives in the offshore sea canyons. Although enjoyed by many thousands of people, the seal colony is at risk due to a lawsuit which may soon force the city to dredge the beach to evict the seals. Another view of Casa Beach facing north can be seen in the following Gigapan which can also be viewed in GoogleEarth: www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=3846
