This view is from above Conway Summit. The lake was once a mountain range that blew up in one very major event leaving this caldera. Mono Lake is very salty and the only thing living with its waters are brine shrimp whose flavor has been used for shrimp flavored chips. Black flies live along its shoreline (these were said to be very tasty when dried - a favorite among the naitive locals at one time). Most of thesea gulls in California hatched on the large island.
