The Ka`iwi Coast of east O`ahu. This area was purchased from a private owner to protect the open space. This slice of O`ahu's coastline includes Makapu`u Point (behind), Sandy Beach (Sandy's), the Halona Blowhole, From Here to Eternity Beach, Hanauma Bay, and Koko Crater. Koko Head is near the top left of the image. Koko Crater is a volcanic tuff cone. It is higher to the southwest; the trade winds from the northeast blowing the ash so that it piled up on the downwind side. This same structure is apparent at Diamond Head and Punchbowl craters. All of the cinder cones and lava flows along Ka`iwi are from the Koko Fissure that erupted less than 100,000 years ago, long after the formation of the Ko`olau volcano (2 million years) that comprises the eastern section of Oahu.
